Rajasthan Minister's 'Singing-Dancing' Remark Amid Women Deaths Triggers Political Controversy

Minister's remark draws criticism amid deaths of women.

A remark by Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar regarding critically ill pregnant women at Bikaner’s PBM Hospital has sparked a political controversy, with the Congress accusing the BJP government of insensitivity amid concerns over maternal healthcare in the state. The controversy arose after Khimsar reportedly stated that the pregnant women admitted to the hospital were already in a serious condition and “did not come dancing and singing.” The comment drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who argued that such remarks were inappropriate given reports of maternal deaths and the deteriorating health condition of several women.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot criticized the minister and urged the state government to take the issue more seriously. Referring to recent reports of deaths among pregnant women in Kota and cases involving critically ill patients in Bikaner, Gehlot said the government should focus on restoring public confidence in the healthcare system. Gehlot also called for a thorough investigation into the incidents and measures to reassure expectant mothers seeking treatment at government hospitals. He alleged that concerns had emerged regarding infections and the quality of medicines being provided, and claimed that healthcare indicators had worsened compared to the period when the Congress was in power.

The health minister has not issued a public statement since the controversy erupted. However, sources close to him maintained that his remarks were taken out of context. According to those sources, Khimsar had visited PBM Hospital specifically to review the condition of five critically ill pregnant women and had personally examined their medical reports. The sources further stated that the minister’s comments were intended to explain that the women had arrived at the hospital in an already critical state and were not a reflection on the patients themselves.

They argued that his remarks were made while briefing reporters on the seriousness of the cases and the medical challenges involved in treating them. The episode has intensified the political debate over healthcare management in Rajasthan, particularly concerning maternal health services. With opposition parties demanding accountability and clarity on the circumstances surrounding recent deaths and critical illnesses, the issue is expected to remain a subject of political and public scrutiny in the coming days.
