Raj Thackeray Targets BJP Leader Over ‘Laughing At Deaths’ Comment In Mumbai Mishaps

Row erupts over BJP leader’s controversial remarks.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has launched a sharp attack on Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding action over a controversy involving a viral video allegedly showing a senior BJP Mumbai functionary reacting insensitively to recent civic tragedies in the city. The row has triggered a fresh political confrontation in Maharashtra over accountability and public conduct of elected representatives.

In an open letter posted on social media platform X, Raj Thackeray criticised the state leadership for what he described as silence over the incident. He alleged that inaction in such matters would damage Maharashtra’s political culture and erode public trust in governance. The MNS chief’s remarks come amid growing political tension following infrastructure-related mishaps and civic issues in Mumbai that have drawn public scrutiny in recent weeks.

Without directly naming the BJP leader involved, Raj Thackeray referred to allegations that a party office-bearer was seen laughing in a viral video reportedly linked to two recent deaths in Mumbai. He said the absence of disciplinary action reflected poorly on the state government’s priorities and raised concerns about the seriousness with which public sentiment and tragedy were being addressed by those in power.

In his letter, Raj Thackeray also criticised what he termed a broader pattern of arrogance in political leadership, stating that citizens increasingly feel that those in power are disconnected from ground realities. He wrote that Maharashtra, once known for its relatively mature political discourse, was at risk of losing its distinct identity due to what he described as declining standards in public behaviour and accountability. He further warned that continued silence on such incidents could deepen public resentment.

The MNS chief contrasted Maharashtra’s political traditions with those of other regions, suggesting that standards of governance and public conduct had deteriorated in recent years. He urged the Chief Minister to take corrective action, stating that failure to do so would send a negative message about the state’s commitment to ethical leadership. His comments were accompanied by a reference to the well-known saying that “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” underscoring his criticism of unchecked authority.

The controversy has added to an already charged political atmosphere in Maharashtra, where opposition parties have frequently targeted the ruling alliance over civic infrastructure failures, monsoon-related incidents and administrative lapses in Mumbai. Issues such as waterlogging, road conditions and safety concerns have become recurring points of debate between rival political groups.

The BJP has not yet issued a detailed official response to Raj Thackeray’s allegations. However, the incident has intensified political scrutiny over public conduct by party representatives, particularly in the context of sensitive civic tragedies. As the debate continues, the issue is expected to remain a flashpoint in Maharashtra’s political landscape, with opposition parties seeking accountability and the government facing pressure to respond decisively.
