Rahul Gandhi Terms Telangana Civic Poll Results 'Victory for Congress Welfare Model'

Rahul Gandhi hails Congress' majority in Telangana municipal elections as endorsement of its welfare governance model.

Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday lauded the party’s performance in the Telangana civic elections as a mandate for its governance model centered on welfare, inclusive growth, and dignity. He thanked party workers and citizens, calling the victory a shared achievement.

The Congress won 64 of the 116 municipalities and three of the seven municipal corporations, securing nearly 60% of urban local bodies. This includes major wins in Mancherial, Ramagundam, and Nalgonda corporations, while the Kothagudem corporation saw a tie between Congress and the Communist Party of India with 22 seats each, highlighting a competitive but collaborative political environment.

The ruling BRS managed to win 13 municipalities and three corporations, while 38 municipalities produced no clear majority. Both Congress and BRS are now engaging with independents and smaller parties to secure leadership positions in these hung bodies, giving Congress control in roughly three-fourths of municipalities despite the fractured results.

Across wards, Congress dominated with 1,347 of 2,582 seats, while BRS secured 717, and the BJP won 261. In municipal corporations, out of 378 divisions with results, Congress claimed 177, BRS 57, BJP 70, and others 74. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party in Karimnagar and Nizamabad corporations but failed to secure outright control in any municipality.

Polling took place on Wednesday across 116 municipalities and seven corporations, with over 73% voter turnout. Counting began under tight security on Friday morning. The results mark a significant shift in Telangana politics, reversing the dominance of the BRS in urban local governance seen in the 2020 municipal elections.

Rahul Gandhi emphasised that the Congress victory represents public support for the vision of a “Prajala Telangana,” where development reaches every family, reaffirming the party’s focus on welfare-driven governance and inclusive development across the state.
