Rahul Gandhi Takes Congress's Dalit Outreach to Lucknow With Kanshi Ram Tribute Event
Rahul Gandhi will meet Dalit leaders ahead of UP Assembly elections.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is set to attend an event in Lucknow on March 13 to mark the legacy of Kanshi Ram, two days ahead of the BSP founder’s birth anniversary. The programme will be held at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan and is expected to bring together Dalit scholars, social activists, and community leaders for discussions on social justice and representation.
Rahul Gandhi, who represents Rae Bareli as a Member of Parliament, is expected to address the gathering and interact with prominent Dalit intellectuals and leaders attending the event. Party sources said the programme is being organised as a tribute to Kanshi Ram, widely regarded as a central figure in the Bahujan political movement in north India. Discussions at the event are likely to focus on issues related to social empowerment, governance, and the political representation of marginalised communities.
Congress leaders said the programme is part of a broader outreach effort by the party to strengthen engagement with Dalit leaders and thinkers in Uttar Pradesh. The initiative comes as political parties intensify their strategies in the state ahead of the next Assembly elections. Organisers said the event will highlight Kanshi Ram’s contributions to the struggle for social justice and underline the continuing relevance of his ideas in contemporary politics.

Kanshi Ram founded the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1984 and played a key role in mobilising Dalits and other marginalised communities into a powerful political constituency, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. His birth anniversary on March 15 is widely observed by supporters of the BSP. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party has announced plans to commemorate the occasion as “PDA Diwas,” a move criticised by Mayawati, who called it political posturing by party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The political significance of the anniversary is expected to grow as Uttar Pradesh moves closer to the next Assembly elections.
