Rahul Gandhi Says Major Economic Shock Will Affect Youth, Workers And Small Traders
Rahul Gandhi warned of an upcoming economic shock that he said will impact youth and small traders most.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday warned of “very, very tough times” ahead for the Indian economy, claiming that a major economic shock is approaching and will disproportionately affect youth, labourers, and small traders across the country. He made these remarks during his visit to his parliamentary constituency Raebareli, where he addressed political concerns while interacting with party workers.
Gandhi alleged that the expected economic disruption would not impact large business houses or top political leadership, but instead place pressure on ordinary citizens. Referring to prominent industrialists, he said that groups such as “Adani and Ambani,” along with the Prime Minister, would remain unaffected, while the burden would fall on young job seekers, workers, and small business owners. His comments were aimed at highlighting what he described as widening economic inequality.
He also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over what he called inconsistencies in messaging on fiscal discipline. Gandhi alleged that while the Prime Minister has publicly spoken about the importance of austerity and limiting foreign travel, he himself continues to undertake frequent international visits. He used this contrast to question the government’s economic priorities and governance approach.

The Congress leader arrived at Lucknow airport earlier in the day before travelling directly to Raebareli, where he was received by senior party leaders including Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai and Congress Legislative Party leader Aradhana Mishra. His visit forms part of a two-day tour of Raebareli and Amethi, two constituencies considered long-standing political strongholds for the Congress party.
The remarks come amid ongoing political debates over economic growth, employment generation, and inflation concerns in the country. While Gandhi has repeatedly raised issues related to joblessness and inequality in Parliament and public rallies, the ruling party has consistently defended its economic policies, citing infrastructure development and welfare schemes as key achievements.
