Rahul Gandhi Raises Student Rights Concerns Over Delhi University Protest Advisory

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised Delhi University’s advisory asking students to stay away from protests at Jantar Mantar, questioning the university’s warning that participation in demonstrations could lead to legal action. Gandhi said students should not be discouraged from exercising their democratic rights and accused the institution of attempting to restrict peaceful expression. Gandhi’s remarks came after Delhi University issued an advisory cautioning students against participating in what it described as unlawful protests at Jantar Mantar.

The university said students should avoid involvement in activities that could violate legal provisions, citing Supreme Court directives related to public demonstrations and maintaining law and order. Sharing the advisory on social media, Gandhi questioned the university’s decision to warn students against attending protests. “Please note, you are the ones that will be held accountable when the time comes,” he said while tagging the advisory issued by Delhi University. His comments added to the ongoing political debate over student participation in protests and the limits of institutional restrictions.

The advisory was issued amid growing student demonstrations and political activity surrounding several issues. Jantar Mantar has traditionally been a designated location for public protests in Delhi, with various groups holding demonstrations there over social, political and educational concerns. Authorities have previously emphasised the need for protests to follow legal procedures and maintain public order. Delhi University’s warning referred to possible legal consequences for students involved in unauthorised demonstrations.
