Rahul Gandhi Plans Amritsar Visit To Heal Rifts Within Punjab Congress Unit

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Amritsar by the end of August as the party leadership intensifies efforts to address factionalism in the Punjab unit ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The proposed visit comes amid continuing tensions between rival groups within the state Congress and is expected to focus on strengthening unity among its leaders. The Punjab Congress has been dealing with internal disagreements involving different factions of the state leadership. Recent clashes between supporters of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring have highlighted the divisions.

The situation has also remained unresolved despite the visit of AICC general secretary and Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, who was tasked with engaging with leaders and addressing concerns within the state unit. Party sources said the schedule for Gandhi's visit is currently being worked out. State Congress leaders are considering organising a “unity bus yatra” during his visit as part of an effort to project a united front. Gandhi is also expected to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple and visit other religious places in Amritsar during his stay. The visit comes as the Congress high command makes renewed efforts to contain factionalism before the next Punjab Assembly election.

The party's internal tensions have become particularly visible during its “Har Booth, Congress Mazboot” campaign, which was intended to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level but also exposed disagreements and competing power centres within the state unit. Sources said Gandhi is expected to deliver a message of unity to Punjab Congress leaders and urge them to work collectively ahead of the election. The party high command has indicated to dissenting leaders that it will not make decisions simply under pressure and will instead consider the political situation on the ground before taking organisational decisions. Several important decisions concerning the Punjab unit are therefore expected in the coming days. The leadership is seeking a structure that can accommodate competing factions while ensuring that the party's electoral preparations are not disrupted by internal disputes.

The objective is to improve coordination between senior leaders and strengthen the organisation ahead of the 2027 contest. Gandhi's proposed visit also comes shortly after a meeting between Punjab Assembly Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and the Congress leadership in New Delhi. On August 12, Bajwa met Gandhi outside Parliament House in the presence of Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal. The situation within the Punjab unit and preparations for the Assembly elections were discussed during the meeting. The Congress faces the challenge of converting its organisational presence in Punjab into an effective electoral campaign while managing differences among senior leaders. Public disagreements between prominent figures can potentially weaken the party's message and affect coordination at the constituency and booth levels.

The proposed “unity bus yatra” is intended to provide a visible demonstration of cooperation among the state leaders. Gandhi's presence, along with a visit to the Golden Temple, could give the party an opportunity to emphasise a common political agenda while attempting to move the focus away from factional disputes. The 2027 Punjab Assembly election remains some time away, but the Congress leadership is already working to strengthen its organisation and settle internal differences. Gandhi's expected visit to Amritsar is likely to form part of that broader effort, with the party hoping that intervention from the central leadership can bring rival factions together and establish a more coordinated campaign for the election.
