Rahul Gandhi Meets KC Venugopal Amid Kerala CM Selection Discussions
Rahul Gandhi reportedly backs KC Venugopal for Kerala Chief Minister.
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is reportedly backing party MP K. C. Venugopal as the preferred choice for the next Chief Minister of Kerala, according to sources familiar with internal party discussions. The development comes amid ongoing deliberations within the Indian National Congress over leadership selection following recent political developments in the state.
According to people aware of the matter, Rahul Gandhi held a private meeting with K. C. Venugopal ahead of a broader discussion at party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi. Sources said that this separate meeting signalled strong support for Venugopal’s candidature, with efforts now reportedly underway to build consensus among Kerala Congress leaders over the next two days.
The internal discussions have also exposed differing opinions within the Kerala unit of the party. Some leaders are said to prefer state-level figures with strong local organisational backing, while others support a centrally positioned leader like Venugopal, who currently serves as the party’s general secretary (organisation). The debate reflects a broader strategic divide between national leadership influence and regional leadership autonomy within the party structure.

Sources further indicated that senior Kerala leaders, including V. D. Satheesan, have expressed reservations about Venugopal’s potential elevation to the chief ministerial post. Allegations of internal factionalism and differences over candidate selection in previous elections were reportedly raised during discussions. Satheesan is said to have argued that stronger local leadership could have improved the party’s electoral performance in certain constituencies.
The political situation is further complicated by the presence of multiple influential leaders within the state unit, including former aspirants like Ramesh Chennithala, alongside coalition partners such as the Indian Union Muslim League, which holds significant weight in the broader United Democratic Front (UDF). With the UDF securing a strong legislative presence, internal consensus-building is seen as crucial before any final decision on leadership is made.
As deliberations continue, the Congress leadership is expected to engage in further rounds of consultation with Kerala MLAs and senior functionaries. However, no official announcement has been made so far regarding the next Chief Ministerial candidate, and the discussions remain part of ongoing internal party strategy talks.
