Rahul Gandhi, Kejriwal React To BJP’s Sweeping West Bengal Election Victory
Opposition questions BJP’s West Bengal win amid political clash
A political controversy erupted on Tuesday after the results of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 triggered sharp reactions from opposition leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissed their criticism as “sour grapes.”
The BJP secured a decisive mandate in the state by winning 207 of the 294 assembly seats, reducing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) to 80 seats. The outcome marks a significant shift in West Bengal’s political landscape, where the TMC had previously maintained a dominant position.
Rahul Gandhi, reacting on social media, criticised sections of the opposition for celebrating the TMC’s defeat, arguing that the result should be viewed in a broader democratic context. He claimed that the outcome reflected deeper concerns about electoral integrity and suggested that similar patterns were emerging across states, though he did not provide specific evidence.

Gandhi further urged political parties to avoid internal competition and focus instead on what he described as larger institutional challenges. He emphasised that the issue was not limited to any single party’s performance but related to the broader functioning of India’s democratic process.
Separately, Arvind Kejriwal also questioned the electoral outcome, pointing to what he described as a contradiction between declining national popularity of the central leadership and improved electoral performance in key states. He raised questions about how such outcomes were possible, implying that factors beyond voter sentiment may have influenced the results.
In response, the BJP rejected the allegations outright. West Bengal BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar dismissed the remarks, stating that the opposition’s criticism stemmed from frustration over the electoral outcome. He said those raising questions should approach the Supreme Court if they had concerns about the conduct of elections, which were held under its supervision.
The strong electoral mandate has intensified political exchanges between national parties, with both sides interpreting the result differently. While the BJP views it as a validation of its organisational strength in the state, opposition leaders have raised concerns about democratic processes and electoral fairness.
As political reactions continue to unfold, the outcome of the West Bengal polls is expected to remain a major talking point in national politics, particularly within the broader dynamics of the opposition INDIA bloc and its response to the BJP’s expanding influence in eastern India.
