Rahul Gandhi Demands PM Modi Clarify India’s Stand on Khamenei Killing
Rahul Gandhi urges PM Modi to clarify India’s stance on Khamenei’s killing and silence.
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday publicly challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the federal government’s silence following the reported killing of Ali Khamenei in a joint military strike by the United States and Israel, calling for “clarity on India’s stand” amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
Addressing the ongoing regional crisis, Gandhi questioned whether the government’s reluctance to issue a formal statement signalled endorsement of the assassination of a foreign head of state, remarking that “silence diminishes India’s standing” and demanding New Delhi articulate a clear position on the incident.
Gandhi’s remarks came as part of broader opposition criticism of the government’s handling of the diplomatic fallout from the Middle East conflict, where recent strikes have triggered airspace closures, international flight disruptions and heightened geopolitical tensions. The Congress leader urged the prime minister to uphold India’s long-standing foreign policy principles by advocating for peace and adherence to international law, rather than appearing passive in the face of external aggression.

The criticism has not been confined to Gandhi alone. Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, echoed the call for accountability, arguing that silence on such a significant international event represented an “abdication of moral leadership” and warranted parliamentary debate without evasion.
Analysis from multiple sources indicates that India’s measured diplomatic response reflects broader strategic interests — including maintaining ties with Gulf states that host substantial Indian expatriate populations and navigating competing global alliances — rather than indifference. The Ministry of External Affairs has stressed calls for restraint, dialogue and civilian safety, consistent with India’s traditional emphasis on peaceful dispute resolution.
Opposition parties and leaders continue to press the government for a more defined foreign policy articulation, underscoring the domestic political impact of international crises and broader debates over India’s role on the global stage as tensions in West Asia remain highly fluid.
