Rahul Gandhi Criticises PM Modi’s Silence On Indian Seafarers Killed In US Strikes
Rahul Gandhi criticises PM Modi’s silence on Indian seafarers killed in US strikes, calling him “compromised”.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the deaths of three Indian seafarers in recent US military strikes on commercial vessels off the coast of Oman, accusing him of maintaining silence on a matter involving Indian lives.
In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi questioned what he described as the Prime Minister’s lack of response after Indian nationals were killed in multiple incidents involving US forces targeting merchant vessels in international waters. He alleged that Modi had not issued any public statement despite the deaths, calling the silence unacceptable in a situation involving Indian citizens abroad.
Gandhi further intensified his criticism by stating that a “compromised PM” could not protect the interests of Indian citizens, arguing that the Prime Minister lacked either the “courage or strength” to confront those responsible. He also suggested that India’s leadership would continue with diplomatic engagements at international forums despite the fatalities, raising concerns over consistency in foreign policy responses.

The remarks come amid escalating diplomatic tension between New Delhi and Washington following a series of US military strikes on foreign-flagged vessels carrying Indian crew members. According to official Indian statements, three ships were targeted over the past several days in operations carried out by the US Navy in waters near the Strait of Hormuz.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has already lodged formal protests with the United States, summoning US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks on more than one occasion. The government has demanded an immediate halt to such strikes and has expressed concern over the safety of Indian seafarers working in high-risk maritime zones.
US Central Command has stated that the targeted vessels were allegedly attempting to transport Iranian oil in violation of an ongoing blockade and that warnings were issued before action was taken. While the US maintains that its operations are aimed at enforcing maritime restrictions, the incidents have triggered political backlash in India and raised concerns over the safety of civilian crew members operating in the region.
