Rahul Gandhi Backs Pawan Khera Amid Passport Row, Attacks Assam CM Sarma

Rahul Gandhi backs Pawan Khera, attacks Assam CM Sarma.

The political row surrounding the passport controversy involving Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera escalated further after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi extended support to him and launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him “the most corrupt” leader in the country.

The remarks come amid an intensifying dispute between the Congress and the Assam government over allegations and counter-allegations linked to Khera and Sarma’s family. The controversy began after FIRs were filed in Assam in connection with statements made by Khera regarding alleged irregularities involving multiple passports and foreign assets linked to the Chief Minister’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

According to reports, Assam Police initiated action against Khera, including searches at his residence in Delhi, following complaints lodged by Sarma’s wife. The case has since evolved into a wider political confrontation, with Congress accusing the Assam government of using state machinery to target opposition leaders, while the ruling side maintains that the allegations made against the Chief Minister’s family are baseless and defamatory.

Rahul Gandhi, while addressing the issue, strongly defended Khera and intensified criticism against Sarma, accusing him of corruption and misuse of power. His comments mark a further deterioration in relations between the Congress leadership and the Assam government, with both sides exchanging strong public statements amid the ongoing legal and political proceedings.

The passport-related controversy itself has seen multiple developments, including police investigations, court proceedings related to anticipatory bail pleas, and competing claims over the authenticity of documents and allegations. While Congress leaders insist they will present further evidence to support their claims, Assam officials have consistently dismissed the allegations as fabricated and politically motivated.

As the matter continues to unfold, it has become a focal point of political tension ahead of key electoral developments in the region, with both parties attempting to shape public perception through legal action, media statements, and political messaging. Authorities have not yet issued a final determination on the underlying allegations, and the situation remains under active legal and political scrutiny.
