Rahul Gandhi Accuses BJP of Planning to Eliminate Indian Constitution in Berlin Speech
Rahul Gandhi accuses BJP of attempting to eliminate the Indian Constitution and capture institutions.
During a visit to Germany, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of attempting to dismantle the Indian Constitution, describing it as a “full-scale assault” on the country’s democratic and institutional framework. Speaking at the Hertie School in Berlin, he emphasized that the Constitution, which guarantees equality and individual rights, is a global democratic asset.
Gandhi alleged that the BJP is using India’s institutions, including the CBI and ED, to consolidate political power. “Going by the number of cases against BJP leaders and the opposition, most of them are political,” he claimed, highlighting what he called the “wholesale capture” of the institutional framework.
The Congress leader stressed that his party is not fighting the BJP directly but resisting its control over India’s institutions. He said the Opposition would develop a “system of resistance” to safeguard democracy, adding that attacks on the Constitution undermine equality between states, languages, religions, and individuals.

On electoral issues, Gandhi claimed irregularities in recent state elections. He alleged problems with India’s electoral machinery, asserting that the Congress had evidence showing it won the Haryana polls and expressing doubts about the fairness of the Maharashtra elections.
Addressing India’s economic model, Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of relying heavily on policies originally implemented by Manmohan Singh, claiming that the current economic strategy has reached its limits. He also reiterated the Opposition’s unity on resisting the ideological influence of the RSS, while acknowledging tactical disagreements within the alliance.
Gandhi concluded by framing Indian democracy as a “global public good,” asserting that the country’s democratic framework, built in 1947, represents a complex union worthy of global respect. He urged vigilance to prevent the erosion of democratic principles and institutional integrity under the current government.
