Rahul Drops Bombshell at INDIA bloc Dinner: EC, BJP "Rigging Democracy"?
INDIA bloc slams BJP-EC over alleged vote fraud.
In a major show of unity and political resolve, top leaders of the INDIA bloc gathered at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s residence on Thursday for a high-stakes dinner meeting where explosive allegations were made against the Election Commission and the ruling BJP.
This was the first physical gathering of opposition stalwarts since June 2024, drawing participants from 25 parties including Sonia Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray, and many others. In a stunning presentation, Rahul Gandhi unveiled what he called the BJP-EC's "vote chori model" — a systematic manipulation of electoral rolls and voter disenfranchisement allegedly being orchestrated through the SIR (Standardisation of Electoral Rolls) initiative in Bihar.
Rahul’s dramatic presentation was said to have left many leaders shocked, as he outlined how voter lists were allegedly being tampered with, posing what he described as a “huge criminal fraud” on Indian democracy. The Congress later posted on social media, "A united front against electoral manipulation! We are committed to protecting democracy and will save it from being destroyed at all costs," while Rahul himself declared on Facebook, "I laid out BJP-EC's #VoteChori blueprint before INDIA alliance leaders tonight. INDIA is united, determined, and ready to defend democracy." The opposition bloc is now gearing up for a protest march from Parliament to the Election Commission’s office, demanding accountability for what they label as deliberate voter fraud.
Congress leader K C Venugopal called the dinner meeting “one of the most successful,” revealing that every leader present condemned the alleged electoral manipulation and backed the demand for a clear, digital voter list. He also noted that RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav invited all alliance leaders to participate in the closing of the Bihar Yatra on September 1, further strengthening opposition coordination. When asked about the upcoming Vice Presidential election, Venugopal said the issue was not a focus, indicating that the bloc remains centered on the immediate threat to electoral integrity. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi echoed these sentiments, calling the dinner a "positive" gathering and confirming that the SIR issue and Rahul’s revelations dominated discussions.

CPI General Secretary D Raja emphasized the seriousness of the meeting, highlighting that the misuse of the SIR revision in Bihar could serve as a national template for voter disenfranchisement. According to Raja, Gandhi's presentation showed examples of how the process could harm voters' rights across the country. National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah went further, raising concerns about the denial of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and the banning of certain books, stating, “We also raised the ban on books in J&K. We regret that this is unconstitutional, it should not be done.” He added, “I saw how votes are stolen… Our concern is statehood. We raised that issue. The statehood that was promised has not been given.”
Notable attendees at the dinner also included Chief Ministers Siddaramaiah (Karnataka), Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu (Himachal Pradesh), and Revanth Reddy (Telangana). Priyanka Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, Mahua Maji, Dimple Yadav, and other prominent opposition faces further underlined the broad participation in what is now a full-blown political confrontation over the legitimacy of the electoral process. Leaders from parties like the Forward Bloc, VCK, Kerala Congress (M), MDMK, KMDK, PWK, RLP, IUML, and Kerala Congress (J) also lent their voices to the concerns raised.
The INDIA bloc has accused the BJP and the Election Commission of collusion, alleging that the SIR exercise will disenfranchise marginalized groups and distort the electoral playing field. With preparations now underway for a protest march to the Election Commission headquarters on Monday, the opposition alliance appears poised to escalate its campaign against what it calls a deliberate attack on Indian democracy.
