Punjab Drugs Crisis Emerges As BJP’s New Political Weapon Ahead Of 2027

The drug crisis in Punjab is increasingly emerging as a major political issue for the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the party appearing to build a coordinated campaign around the subject ahead of the next Assembly elections. What began largely as a state-level concern over narcotics and law and order is now being repeatedly raised by BJP leaders at different levels, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Punjab BJP leadership and the party’s national leadership in Parliament.

The latest intervention came from BJP national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh, who raised Punjab’s drug problem in Parliament on Monday. The move assumes significance because it follows Prime Minister Modi’s recent remarks on the issue during his rally in Jalandhar. By taking the matter to Parliament after it had already featured in the Prime Minister’s political messaging in Punjab, the BJP has given the issue a broader national platform and signalled that it intends to maintain pressure over the subject.

The Punjab BJP leadership has also been reinforcing the message. A day before Chugh’s parliamentary intervention, Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon highlighted the drug menace and called for a decisive campaign against it. Dhillon said drugs were destroying the state’s youth and argued that Punjab needed stronger action against the problem. The timing of these statements suggests that the issue is not being raised in isolation but is becoming part of a wider BJP narrative focused on governance, public safety and the future of young people in the state.

The political significance of the issue lies in the BJP’s ability to frame Punjab’s drug problem beyond the traditional boundaries of state law and order. By repeatedly highlighting the issue, the BJP can seek to put its political rivals on the defensive and demand accountability over how effectively the state has tackled narcotics-related challenges.

The BJP also has an advantage in linking its Punjab campaign with the Centre’s broader anti-drug initiatives. At the national level, the BJP government has promoted programmes aimed at combating narcotics and drug abuse. This allows the party to present the Punjab issue as part of a wider national campaign rather than merely a state-specific law-and-order challenge. Such framing could help the BJP argue that tackling the drug menace requires coordination between the state and Centre, while giving the party a larger political platform from which to discuss the issue.

For the BJP, the challenge now will be to convert the drug issue from a recurring political talking point into a sustained electoral narrative. The sequence of Modi raising the subject in Punjab, state BJP leaders intensifying their criticism and Chugh taking the matter to Parliament indicates that the party is placing greater political emphasis on it. Whether the strategy becomes an effective electoral weapon will depend on how convincingly the BJP can connect public concerns over drugs with questions of governance and accountability. But with the Punjab Assembly elections approaching, the repeated focus on narcotics indicates that the issue could occupy a significant place in the BJP’s campaign strategy.
