Punjab Congress Leadership Change: Vijay Inder Singla, Pargat Singh Among Names in Race

Congress weighs a new Punjab chief ahead of 2027 elections.

The Punjab Congress has entered a fresh phase of organisational uncertainty ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, following the resignation of Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as state party president. Warring, who took charge of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) in April 2022, stepped down after the Congress high command reviewed the factional differences within the state unit. The party is expected to announce his successor shortly, with several senior leaders being discussed for the post.

The leadership question has gained urgency after the Congress attempted to balance competing factions by retaining Warring while assigning Charanjit Singh Channi the chairmanship of the Campaign Committee. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was given responsibility for the Core Committee, Vijay Inder Singla was placed in charge of election management, while Partap Singh Bajwa continued as Leader of the Opposition. The arrangement did not fully settle internal differences, and the subsequent appointment of Sachin Pilot as Punjab in-charge brought the organisational issue back into focus.

Among the names being discussed is Vijay Inder Singla, a former Sangrur MP and Punjab minister who currently handles the party's Election Management and Coordination Committee. Reports have identified him as a leading contender for the PPCC post. Other names in circulation include former hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh, Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and former minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria. The contenders bring different combinations of regional, electoral and organisational experience.

The choice also has a significant social and regional dimension. Punjab's politics encompasses differences involving Sikh and Hindu communities, Jat Sikh and Dalit representation, as well as the political characteristics of Malwa, Majha and Doaba. These categories do not translate directly into fixed voting blocs, with electoral behaviour also influenced by candidates, local issues, leadership and regional considerations. Consequently, the Congress leadership has to consider not only the individual profile of the next PPCC president but also how the wider organisational structure accommodates its senior leaders.

The role of Charanjit Singh Channi and Partap Singh Bajwa will also remain important regardless of who takes charge of the state organisation. Channi, a former chief minister and Jalandhar MP, currently heads the Congress Campaign Committee for the 2027 election, while Bajwa serves as Leader of the Opposition and has previously been PPCC president. Keeping these responsibilities separate or restructuring them could affect how the party distributes authority among its senior figures. The Congress therefore faces both a leadership decision and a broader organisational balancing exercise as it prepares for the next Assembly contest.
