Punjab BJP Flags Gangster Role in Majha Polls, Questions Rural Employment Delivery

BJP alleges gangster involvement in Majha elections, urges a probe, and criticises AAP on policing and jobs.

Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has demanded an impartial and time-bound investigation into serious allegations levelled by a gangster in a recent television interview. The accused claimed that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government transferred him from an Assam jail to Punjab under the pretext of interrogation, where he was allegedly instructed to make threatening calls to voters in the Majha region to help AAP candidates during the recent Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections. The gangster further alleged direct communication with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Jakhar described the entry of gangsters into politics as a grave threat to democracy and expressed willingness to trust the chief minister's denial over a criminal's word, provided a thorough probe clears the air. He highlighted the irony of such accusations against AAP, noting party convener Arvind Kejriwal's November 7 announcement to eliminate gangsters from Punjab within seven days. Jakhar criticised the state government's loss of credibility, stating it neither inspires fear among criminals nor commands public respect while tarnishing the Punjab Police's historic role in eradicating terrorism.

The BJP leader appealed to the media to fulfil its moral responsibility by refraining from providing platforms to gangsters and urged Punjab's youth to reject them as role models, calling such elements societal enemies who should not be glamorised as "Robin Hood" figures. Jakhar also warned against ongoing extortion and fear tactics affecting citizens.

Separately addressing the Centre's proposed new rural employment law to replace MGNREGA, Jakhar questioned the Punjab government's opposition, pointing to official data showing only 26.25 days of average employment per family up to December 13, 2025—far below the guaranteed 100 days—and historically around 38 days annually. He accused AAP and Congress of prioritising corruption over the poor's welfare, suggesting their resistance stems from fears that the new framework would curb malpractices by favoured contractors.
