Punjab Assembly Erupts Over Abohar Murder, Congress MLAs Walk Out
Tensions flare as opposition demands law and order debate.
The Punjab Assembly descended into chaos on Friday, the second day of a special session, as Congress MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, staged a walkout over the murder of Abohar businessman Sanjay Verma on July 7. Bajwa demanded a discussion on the killing, citing deteriorating law and order, but Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan rejected the request, noting the special session lacked a Zero Hour for such debates.
Congress MLAs stormed the Well of the House, raising slogans against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. Tensions escalated when Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema accused Congress of patronizing gangsters, prompting a heated exchange. Bajwa, alleging he was denied a chance to respond, led MLAs back to the Well, shouting anti-government slogans before walking out. The Speaker, unmoved, sought their input on extending the session by two days per the Business Advisory Committee’s recommendation, but received no response.
Meanwhile, Punjab Minister Barinder Goyal introduced a resolution opposing the Centre’s deployment of CISF personnel at Bhakra Beas Management Board dams. The brief first day of the session, lasting 11 minutes, had paid tributes to Verma and others, but opposition criticism persists over AAP’s handling of law and order.
