Pune Set For More Metro Routes In May And July: CM Fadnavis
CM Fadnavis confirms additional Pune Metro routes to open in May and July for enhanced urban connectivity.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Pune will receive additional metro rail routes opening in May and July 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to expand the city's metro network and alleviate severe traffic congestion in the rapidly growing IT and industrial hub.
The statement, made on March 15, 2026, highlights the government's commitment to accelerating metro development in Pune. Fadnavis indicated that more phases of the Pune Metro will be inaugurated during these months, building on the existing operational sections and recent progress. This comes amid broader state-level infrastructure pushes outlined in the Maharashtra Budget 2026-27, which prioritizes urban mobility across cities like Pune, Mumbai, and Nagpur, targeting significant expansions by 2029.
Key focus areas include the completion and opening of segments on Pune Metro Line 3 (the Pink Line), the 23.3-km elevated corridor connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar (District Court), developed under a PPP model by Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd (Tata-Siemens JV). While earlier targets aimed for March or April 2026 launches, revised timelines now point to partial or phased openings in May for an 11-km stretch, with the remaining 12 km potentially following in July. Trial runs are underway, and finishing works at stations, safety protocols, and commuter facilities are being fast-tracked to meet the mid-year targets ahead of the monsoon.

The expansions align with Pune Metro Phase 2 preparations, where new corridors such as Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi (32 km, 28 stations, approved in late 2025) and extensions from Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road have received approvals and funding. These aim to connect older city areas with emerging suburbs, though construction timelines for Phase 2 remain longer-term. The upcoming May and July inaugurations are expected to enhance connectivity for daily commuters in tech corridors like Hinjawadi and central Pune, reducing reliance on road transport.
Fadnavis emphasized that the government has planned an 80-km metro network for Pune, with substantial work already progressing on over half of it. The additions will complement the existing Purple and Aqua Lines, boosting overall coverage and supporting Pune's economic growth as a major educational and industrial center. Residents and stakeholders anticipate relief from chronic traffic issues, with these openings marking tangible progress in the state's metro ambitions.
This development underscores Maharashtra's broader infrastructure agenda, including metro extensions statewide, as the government works toward sustainable urban transport solutions in one of India's fastest-growing cities.
