Priyanka Gandhi Accuses Modi Government Of Undermining Democracy Over Delhi Protest Curbs
Priyanka Gandhi criticises protest restrictions and questions democratic freedoms under Modi’s government.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday accused the Narendra Modi-led central government of undermining democratic principles, criticising the restrictions imposed ahead of a planned protest in the national capital. Describing the political situation as increasingly authoritarian, she alleged that the country was being governed through the actions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Her remarks came amid heightened security arrangements and detentions ahead of a demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Congress leader’s criticism came as opposition parties protested against restrictions imposed by Delhi Police on gatherings and demonstrations. The proposed protest, organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and other groups, centred on allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders have questioned the exercise and demanded accountability from the Election Commission, while the authorities have cited security and law-and-order concerns in explaining the restrictions.
Delhi witnessed extensive security arrangements on October 10, with police and paramilitary personnel deployed across central areas, major roads and locations near Jantar Mantar. Barricades and checkpoints were established to prevent large gatherings, while restrictions on transport services affected commuters travelling into the capital. Several metro stations were closed and train services were disrupted as authorities prepared for the demonstration, prompting concerns about the impact of security measures on ordinary residents and visitors.

Priyanka’s remarks added to criticism from other Congress leaders over the handling of the protests. Party representatives have argued that peaceful demonstrations are an essential part of democratic participation and that restrictions should not prevent citizens from raising concerns about electoral processes. The Congress has also maintained that its campaign demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation would continue, keeping pressure on the Election Commission and the central government over the disputed voter-list revision exercise.
The controversy has intensified the political confrontation between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over democratic freedoms, electoral transparency and the right to protest. While opposition leaders have accused the authorities of suppressing dissent, the administration has defended security measures as necessary to maintain public order. The dispute has also drawn attention to the challenge of balancing public safety with citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and political expression.
