Prashant Kishor Begins Silent Fast at Bhitiharwa Ashram After Bihar Poll Debacle
PK begins day-long maun upvaas at Gandhi ashram.
Following Jan Suraaj Party’s disappointing performance in the Bihar assembly elections, political strategist Prashant Kishor commenced a day-long silent fast at the historic Bhitiharwa Ashram in West Champaran district on Monday. The symbolic act of “maun upvaas” marks a moment of introspection for the 48-year-old leader after his ambitious electoral debut fell short of expectations.
The Bhitiharwa Ashram holds profound significance for Kishor, as it was from this very location—established by Mahatma Gandhi nearly a century ago—that he launched his 3,500-kilometre pada yatra three years ago. That journey, steeped in Gandhian ideals, eventually led to the formal founding of Jan Suraaj Party on Gandhi Jayanti in 2024.
Accompanied by senior party colleagues including state unit chief Manoj Bharti, Kishor paid floral tributes at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue before beginning his silent observance. The choice of venue and the adoption of maun upvaas reflect his continued reverence for Gandhian principles of truth, non-violence, and self-reflection.

The fast comes amid widespread analysis of Jan Suraaj’s electoral outcome, where the party failed to secure a single seat despite high expectations built over years of grassroots mobilisation. Party sources describe the observance as a personal and political pause to reassess strategy and renew commitment to public service.
As Kishor maintains silence through the day at the ashram that once hosted the Father of the Nation, the gesture has drawn attention across Bihar’s political landscape, signalling both humility in defeat and determination to continue the long struggle for systemic change.
