Power Dress Politics: Why Vijay Ditched the Dhoti for a Sharp Black Suit

Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister wearing black suit, breaking long-standing political dress traditions.

Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay made a striking political debut as he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at Chennai’s Nehru Stadium, drawing massive crowds and intense media attention. The event marked a dramatic entry into state leadership for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief, with supporters erupting in applause as cameras captured his arrival and oath-taking ceremony.

Vijay’s appearance at the ceremony became a major talking point, as he opted for a sharply tailored black suit paired with a white shirt instead of the traditional white shirt and dhoti commonly worn by Tamil Nadu political leaders. The choice was widely interpreted as a modern “power dressing” statement, signaling a departure from long-established political dress norms in the state.

The black suit also carried layered political symbolism in Tamil Nadu’s socio-political context. Historically associated with reformist movements linked to E V Ramasamy, black attire has often represented resistance to traditional authority and advocacy for social equality. Vijay’s styling, according to observers, appeared to blend modern political branding with regional ideological undertones.

Shortly after taking oath, Vijay addressed the gathering in his first speech as Chief Minister, asserting strong leadership control over his administration. He declared that there would be no competing power centres within the government, emphasizing that decision-making authority would remain firmly with him. His remarks were widely seen as an attempt to project stability and consolidate authority at the beginning of his tenure.

Vijay, who referred to himself as “Thambi” (younger brother), also issued warnings to political opponents, cautioning against attempts to destabilize his government. He stated that he would not allow wrongdoing within his administration and urged adversaries to abandon any disruptive intentions. His speech combined assertive political messaging with personal appeals, reflecting both confidence and a defensive posture as he assumes office.

The new Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to alliance partners and supporting leaders, including senior figures from national parties who helped secure the legislative majority for his government formation. Along with Vijay, nine ministers from his party were sworn in, while allied parties are expected to join the cabinet after portfolio negotiations are finalized, marking the beginning of a new coalition-driven political phase in the state.
