Political Setback For Young Chairperson As No-Confidence Motion Ends Tenure

The United Democratic Front (UDF) lost control of the Pala Municipality on Tuesday after a no-confidence motion moved by the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) was passed, removing municipal chairperson Diya Binu Pulikkakandam from office. Diya Binu, who was recognised as the country's youngest municipal chairperson, was defeated after the motion received 17 votes in favour, marking a significant political setback for the UDF in the local body.

The no-confidence motion succeeded after four Congress councillors voted against the party's official position despite a whip issued by the party. A total of five members from the ruling front supported the motion, resulting in the collapse of the UDF-led municipal administration. The development has triggered political discussions in Pala, with the outcome highlighting internal differences within the Congress-led alliance.

The rebel Congress councillors defended their decision, stating that they had not received the party whip and had acted according to the direction of the local Congress committee. They maintained that their action was based on local political considerations and claimed that the Congress would continue to have influence over the municipality despite the change in leadership. The internal disagreement has emerged as a key factor behind the fall of the UDF administration.

Following her removal, Diya Binu said she accepted the democratic decision and respected the outcome of the no-confidence motion. She stated that no allegations of corruption, misuse of public funds, bribery, nepotism, violation of government orders or illegal activities had been raised against her during her tenure. She said her decisions as chairperson were guided by transparency, legal procedures and public interest.

Diya Binu thanked municipal officials, employees, councillors and residents of Pala for their support during her time in office. She said that public positions are temporary responsibilities entrusted by citizens rather than positions of authority, and expressed her commitment to continue working as an elected councillor. She added that she would remain focused on transparency, the rule of law and public welfare despite the change in political circumstances.

The no-confidence motion has altered the political balance in Pala Municipality and represents a setback for the UDF, while the LDF has gained momentum following the successful challenge to the administration. The next phase will focus on the formation of a new leadership structure in the municipality and how the competing political groups manage the shifting dynamics after the vote.
