Political Row Erupts As BJP Criticises Vijay Wadettiwar’s Remarks On US Incident

BJP criticises Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar’s remarks and urges Rahul Gandhi to condemn his statement.

Political tensions escalated on Monday after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Maharashtra Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar of making remarks allegedly endorsing violence in the context of a recent shooting incident in the United States. The controversy emerged after comments linked to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner incident drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla strongly condemned Wadettiwar’s statements, alleging that they reflected support for violence against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the Congress leader’s comments were inappropriate and compared them to a broader pattern of provocative political rhetoric. Poonawalla also urged senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to publicly disapprove of the remarks made by the MLA.

In his statement, Poonawalla said the Congress party was engaging in what he described as hostile political messaging rather than constructive dialogue. He further claimed that such remarks had been made repeatedly by opposition leaders and questioned whether they reflected the broader stance of the Congress leadership. His comments added to the already heightened political exchange between the two parties.

The controversy stems from Vijay Wadettiwar’s remarks made on Sunday, in which he criticised US President Donald Trump while discussing global political developments and public reactions. Wadettiwar drew parallels between international events and political sentiments in India, stating that public dissatisfaction with leadership is often reflected in different forms of protest across countries.

Wadettiwar, however, also clarified that violence against any leader was not acceptable. Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, he said that while public anger may find expression in various ways, any attack on individuals in high office should not occur. He referred to the recent shooting incident in Washington DC, which took place during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where a suspect allegedly opened fire before being subdued by security personnel.

The incident in the United States led to the evacuation of senior officials, including the US President and Vice President, though authorities confirmed that security personnel were injured. Against this backdrop, the political row in India has intensified, with the BJP demanding clarification and condemnation from the Congress leadership over Wadettiwar’s remarks.
