PM Modi’s Seychelles Visit Focuses On Maritime Security And Regional Cooperation

PM Modi highlights India’s regional security and cooperation role.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Seychelles has highlighted India’s continued commitment to strengthening maritime security cooperation and serving as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The visit focused on expanding bilateral ties while reinforcing cooperation with island nations located along key maritime routes.

Seychelles, a 115-island archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, holds strategic importance due to its location near major sea lanes connecting East Africa, West Asia, and other parts of the Indian Ocean region. Strengthening maritime cooperation with Seychelles is considered significant for ensuring the security of these routes and promoting stability in the region.

During his meeting with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, Prime Minister Modi discussed opportunities in areas including industries, connectivity, technology, digital infrastructure, healthcare, education, food security, housing, transport, skill development, and defence cooperation. Modi said both countries view the Indian Ocean as a shared space where security, sustainability, and prosperity are collective responsibilities.

As part of defence and maritime cooperation, India handed over several Made-in-India assets to Seychelles, including the Fast Patrol Vessel PS LESPWAR, along with ambulances, utility vehicles, and laser radial boats. The assistance is aimed at improving Seychelles’ maritime surveillance capabilities and strengthening its ability to monitor and protect its Exclusive Economic Zone.

India has consistently supported Seychelles in enhancing its maritime security infrastructure through defence assistance and capacity-building initiatives. Over the years, India has provided patrol boats, interceptor boats, and Dornier aircraft to support Seychelles Coast Guard operations and improve maritime reconnaissance capabilities.

Experts have noted that India’s approach in the Indian Ocean focuses on cooperative security rather than unilateral dominance. By assisting neighbouring island nations and strengthening defence partnerships, India aims to address regional maritime challenges while maintaining trust and cooperation among Indian Ocean littoral states. The Seychelles visit further reflects New Delhi’s broader strategy of promoting a secure and stable Indian Ocean region.
