PM Modi's 'Jhooth Ki Goonj' Jibe at Rahul Gandhi After 7.8% GDP Data
PM Modi links GDP growth data to attack on Rahul Gandhi.
PM Modi hailed India’s 7.8 per cent economic growth in the April-June quarter and said the performance reflected the country’s resilience amid global conflicts and economic uncertainty. Speaking from Kyrgyzstan, where he is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit, PM Modi congratulated citizens and credited their determination and hard work for the stronger-than-expected growth figures.
PM Modi said the world had faced continued instability since the Covid era, with wars, crises and disruptions affecting global supply chains. Despite these challenges, he said India had continued to progress at a fast pace. He described the 7.8 per cent growth as a reflection of the collective strength of the country and said India must maintain its economic momentum.
Taking an apparent swipe at Rahul Gandhi and his campaign, PM Modi said an “echo of lies” was being spread by people he described as consumed by despair. His use of the phrase “jhooth ki goonj” came amid political exchanges over Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ campaign. The BJP had previously used similar wording while disputing several claims made during events connected to the Congress campaign.

PM Modi also renewed his appeal for greater self-reliance, asking citizens to follow the principles of Swadeshi and Vocal for Local. He encouraged people to choose destinations within India for holidays and weddings, promoting the idea of “Wed in India”. He also urged citizens to strengthen domestic consumption and support locally produced goods as part of the broader push towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The Prime Minister said reducing unnecessary dependence on imports would help strengthen the country’s self-reliance. He expressed confidence that continued efforts towards economic growth and domestic development would help India achieve its goal of becoming a developed nation by the time it marks 100 years of independence. PM Modi said the country must work collectively to build a stronger future for its youth.
India’s gross domestic product grew 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, compared with 8.6 per cent in the previous quarter. Although growth moderated from the preceding quarter, it exceeded market expectations and the Reserve Bank of India’s forecast of 7 per cent. The performance came despite concerns over global uncertainty and disruptions in energy markets, keeping India among the world’s fastest-growing major economies.
