PM Modi’s 12th Independence Day Speech: Will He Tackle Trump’s Trade Threats?
PM Modi to deliver his 12th Independence Day speech amid trade and political tensions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to deliver his 12th consecutive Independence Day address on August 15, surpassing Indira Gandhi’s record of 11 consecutive speeches and trailing only Jawaharlal Nehru for the most Red Fort addresses. The speech, delivered on India’s 79th Independence Day, comes amid heightened scrutiny following Operation Sindoor and opposition allegations of electoral irregularities in Bihar.
Modi is expected to emphasize India’s unwavering stance on national security, economic progress, and the expansion of welfare initiatives under his leadership. With the goal of achieving a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047, he will likely highlight the push for self-reliance through indigenous innovation and manufacturing. The address may also address global trade tensions, particularly in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods and his controversial claims of mediating India-Pakistan relations.
Modi’s previous speeches have tackled pressing issues, from advocating a secular civil code to announcing 75,000 new medical seats in 2024. Social issues like women’s safety and empowerment, alongside campaigns against naxalism and Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, have been consistent themes. With the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament disrupted by opposition demands for electoral transparency, political observers anticipate whether Modi will address these concerns.
