PM Modi to Open India’s First Nature-Inspired Airport Terminal at Guwahati Airport
PM Modi to inaugurate stunning nature-themed Guwahati terminal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new integrated terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on December 20, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Northeast India's aviation infrastructure. Constructed at an approximate cost of Rs 4,000 crore, this expansive facility represents the largest airport terminal in the region and is positioned to enhance connectivity, stimulate tourism, and drive economic development across Assam and neighboring areas.
The terminal, seven times larger than its predecessor, spans nearly 1.4 lakh square meters and is engineered to accommodate up to 13.1 million passengers annually by 2032. It will serve as a vital regional hub, facilitating stronger linkages between India and Southeast Asia, with capabilities to manage 34 air traffic movements per hour—the highest in the Northeast. Advanced features include one of the most sophisticated Instrument Landing Systems, alongside extensive upgrades to runways, aprons, and taxiways.
What distinguishes this terminal is its pioneering nature-inspired architecture, themed "Bamboo Orchids," making it India's first fully nature-themed airport. The design draws extensively from Assam's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, incorporating over 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo, 57 columns inspired by the indigenous Kopou orchid, motifs from the iconic japi hat, and symbols of the one-horned rhinoceros. A prominent bamboo vault serves as a multifunctional cultural center, while a dedicated zone evokes Kaziranga National Park.

A standout element is the "Sky Forest," featuring nearly one lakh indigenous plants that create an immersive forest-like experience for arriving passengers. The interiors further integrate over 2,000 plant species, artefacts from Majuli Island, and landscapes reflecting the Brahmaputra River's flow, blending sustainability with aesthetic appeal.
Prioritizing passenger convenience, the terminal incorporates cutting-edge digital solutions, including 14 entry points with four DigiYatra gates, full-body scanners, automated baggage systems, fast-track immigration, and AI-powered operations. As part of Modi's two-day Assam visit, the inauguration will be followed by foundation stone ceremonies for additional projects and tributes to historical figures associated with the state's identity.
