PM Modi Strengthens India-New Zealand Partnership During Landmark Visit
PM Modi visit aims to deepen India-New Zealand partnership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to New Zealand has highlighted India’s renewed efforts to deepen bilateral relations and strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries, according to a report. The visit, held on July 10-11, marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Auckland in four decades and focused on expanding cooperation across trade, defence, security, technology, education, tourism, and cultural ties.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi held detailed discussions with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on the entire range of bilateral relations. The two leaders reviewed areas including trade and investment, defence cooperation, maritime security, agriculture technology, sports, education, tourism, and people-to-people connections. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged in sectors such as defence and maritime security, hydrography, disaster management, dairy, tourism, food technology, cultural cooperation, and ocean research.
The visit followed New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s trip to India in 2025, during which both nations announced the creation of a Strategic Partnership and endorsed a Roadmap to 2030. The framework aims to guide cooperation between the two countries over the coming years, with both sides seeking stronger collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

Economic cooperation remained a key focus of Prime Minister Modi’s visit, particularly after the signing of a trade agreement between India and New Zealand. The agreement aims to expand cooperation in agriculture, food technology, skills mobility, and investment. New Zealand is expected to gain greater access to the Indian market for products such as apples, kiwi fruit, and Manuka honey, while India’s dairy sector remains protected under the arrangement.
The agreement also includes opportunities for around 5,000 skilled Indian workers annually to work in New Zealand and a commitment from Wellington to encourage investments worth USD 20 billion in India over 15 years. The two countries also discussed the role of businesses, with Modi describing the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement as a significant step that could create new opportunities in market access, investment, services, technology, and talent mobility.
The visit also highlighted the importance of the Indian diaspora in New Zealand, which numbers around 300,000 people. Prime Minister Modi addressed a large gathering of the Indian community at the “Kia Ora Modi” event, attended by around 10,000 people, with Prime Minister Luxon joining as a special gesture. The leaders also emphasised cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, maritime security, sports, and cultural exchanges, reflecting the growing importance of the India-New Zealand partnership.
