PM Modi Launches GPRA Redevelopment Projects Worth ₹15,200 Crore In Delhi

PM Modi launches ₹15,200 crore redevelopment projects to modernise government housing and offices in Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth ₹15,200 crore under the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) redevelopment plan, aimed at modernising residential colonies for central government employees in the national capital.

Accompanied by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar, the prime minister visited newly redeveloped GPRA Type-5 quarters in Sarojini Nagar and ceremonially handed over house keys to several women allottees. During the visit, he also interacted with women labourers involved in the construction work, acknowledging their role in the redevelopment effort.

The projects are spread across major government residential colonies in the city, including Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar and Sriniwaspuri. According to an official statement, the initiative is part of a broader push to upgrade ageing government housing infrastructure and provide modern residential and office facilities for public servants.

Officials said the redevelopment programme is being implemented through a self-sustainable financial model designed to minimise pressure on the public exchequer. Under this approach, a limited portion of the land within the project area is developed and monetised for commercial and residential purposes. Revenue generated from these components is then used to finance the broader redevelopment.

Once completed, the initiative is expected to deliver more than 9,350 modern flats for government employees. The plan also includes the development of approximately 48 lakh square feet of office space intended to support administrative work and improve operational efficiency across government departments.

The government says the redevelopment of GPRA colonies is part of a wider effort to upgrade urban infrastructure in New Delhi while improving living conditions for public sector employees. By combining residential upgrades with commercial development, the model aims to create sustainable funding for large-scale urban renewal projects.
