PM Modi Inaugurates Six BCCI Indoor Cricket Academies Across North-East India
PM Modi inaugurates six BCCI cricket academies across North-East India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated six state-of-the-art indoor cricket academies across North-East India, marking a significant push for sports infrastructure development in the region. The new facilities are part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s broader expansion programme aimed at promoting cricket and nurturing talent in states that have traditionally had limited access to high-end training centres. The inauguration was conducted virtually during a state function in Gangtok.
According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the academies have been established in strategically selected locations across the North-East. These include Rangpo in Sikkim, Doimukh in Arunachal Pradesh, Imphal in Manipur, Madankurklang in Meghalaya, Aizawl in Mizoram, and Dimapur in Nagaland. Officials said the centres are designed to provide year-round indoor coaching and practice facilities regardless of weather conditions.
The project is expected to help young cricketers from the North-East access better coaching, modern practice environments, and structured talent development pathways. For years, the region has produced athletes in multiple sports, but cricket infrastructure has lagged behind compared to other parts of India. With these academies, aspiring players may now receive higher-quality preparation closer to home instead of relocating to larger cricket centres.

The BCCI said the initiative represents an important step in unlocking the sporting potential of the North-East. Investment in indoor academies can also support grassroots tournaments, coaching camps, and age-group development programmes. Cricket administrators have increasingly focused on expanding the game beyond traditional strongholds, with North-Eastern states emerging as an area of strategic importance for long-term growth.
The inauguration also aligns with wider national efforts to improve sports infrastructure and encourage youth participation in organised athletics. By creating facilities across multiple states at once, the project sends a strong signal about inclusive sporting development. If supported with sustained coaching and competition opportunities, the academies could play a major role in producing future cricketers from the North-East region.
