PM Modi Commissions Three Indigenous Warships; India Declares End to Defence Import Reliance

India commissions three indigenous warships, emphasising defence self-reliance push.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenously built naval vessels at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, marking a significant milestone in India's drive towards defence self-reliance and maritime modernisation. The newly inducted ships — INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray — are expected to strengthen the Indian Navy's capabilities across combat operations, hydrographic surveying and coastal defence.

Among the three vessels, INS Dunagiri is a stealth frigate equipped with advanced indigenous technology and a range of modern weapons and sensors. The warship carries the BrahMos surface-to-surface missile system along with a medium-range surface-to-air missile platform, enhancing its offensive and defensive capabilities. The Navy has described the vessel as a highly capable multi-role warship designed for sustained operations and dominance across different dimensions of maritime warfare.

INS Sanshodhak, the fourth vessel in the Survey Vessel (Large) class, has been designed to conduct coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys. The ship will support both defence and civilian maritime requirements by collecting oceanographic and geophysical data. Equipped with advanced survey technologies, including Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Remotely Operated Vehicles, the vessel is expected to play a key role in mapping underwater terrain and supporting navigational safety.

The third vessel, INS Agray, belongs to the Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft programme. It has been specifically developed to detect and counter underwater threats in coastal and shallow-water regions. The ship is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and advanced sonar systems, enabling it to identify and engage hostile submarines operating near India's coastline and strategic maritime zones.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Prime Minister Modi said the three vessels symbolise India's growing defence manufacturing capabilities and commitment to self-reliance. He emphasised that the ships were designed and built in India by Indian industries, engineers and workers. According to the Prime Minister, the country's defence strategy is increasingly focused on indigenous innovation rather than dependence on foreign suppliers, reflecting the broader goals of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Modi also highlighted the importance of maritime strength in enhancing a nation's economic and strategic influence. He said the induction of INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray builds upon the momentum created by the commissioning of INS Vikrant and represents another step forward in India's naval modernisation journey. The addition of the three ships is expected to significantly strengthen the Indian Navy's operational readiness while showcasing the country's expanding capabilities in indigenous defence production.
