PM Modi Backs Radhakrishnan for Uncontested VP Win
NDA’s candidate celebrated, opposition urged to unite.
In a spirited gathering of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi passionately appealed for the unanimous election of C P Radhakrishnan as India’s next Vice President. Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s vice presidential candidate, was warmly felicitated at the meeting attended by top BJP leaders and allies, including several Union ministers. The 67-year-old Maharashtra governor, a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, is set to file his nomination on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward the vice presidency.
Modi, addressing the NDA MPs, lauded Radhakrishnan’s decades-long public service, highlighting his unblemished record and dedication. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju echoed this sentiment, noting that Radhakrishnan’s simplicity and integrity make him an ideal candidate. “His election will be a matter of national pride,” Rijiju told reporters, relaying Modi’s call to opposition parties, particularly the INDIA bloc, to support Radhakrishnan for a consensus victory. Modi personally introduced the Tamil Nadu native, emphasizing his contributions in various roles, from grassroots politics to governance.
With the BJP-led NDA holding a commanding majority in the electoral college, comprising MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Radhakrishnan’s victory is virtually assured. However, the opposition INDIA bloc has signaled its intent to field a rival candidate, setting the stage for a contest. Despite this, the NDA remains confident, buoyed by its numerical strength and Radhakrishnan’s widespread appeal.
