PM Modi Accuses Mamata Banerjee Of Insulting President Murmu With Event Mishandling

PM Modi criticizes Mamata over President Murmu event venue change.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) government for what he described as an “insult” to President Droupadi Murmu, following a last-minute change of venue for a tribal community event in North Bengal. Modi called the development “shameful and unprecedented” in a post on X, saying the State government had “crossed all limits” and failed to respect the office of the President.

The controversy began when the venue of a tribal programme was shifted from Bidhannagar to Goshaipur near Bagdogra Airport, a decision President Murmu suggested may have affected attendance. During her visit, the President noted the absence of the Chief Minister or any State minister to receive her. Referring to Banerjee as her “younger sister,” she questioned whether the Chief Minister was “upset,” and emphasized that the dignity of the President’s office must always be upheld, stating that it remains above politics.

Modi condemned the handling of the event, highlighting the significance of tribal culture and the impact on democratic values. “People who believe in the empowerment of democracy and the tribal community are all deeply hurt,” he said, adding that the President’s expressed anguish had “instilled profound sorrow in the hearts of the people of India.” The Prime Minister stressed that the TMC government’s actions reflected a disregard for the importance of Santhal culture and the institution of the Presidency.

Analysts say the dispute reflects broader political dynamics as national and regional leaders navigate the overlapping pressures of governance, culture, and electoral politics.
