Pinarayi Vijayan Opposes 'The Kerala Story 2,' Calls It Divisive
Kerala Chief Minister criticises sequel, says state will not support divisive narratives.
Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday strongly criticised the upcoming film The Kerala Story 2, asserting that the state would once again reject what he described as attempts to spread hatred through cinema. Responding to reports surrounding the sequel, Vijayan said Kerala had previously taken a firm stand against narratives that, in his view, sought to malign the state and its social fabric.
Vijayan alleged that such films were designed to polarise society by portraying distorted and communalised accounts of events. The Chief Minister maintained that Kerala’s pluralistic traditions and high social development indicators stand in contrast to the image projected by such productions.
The original film, The Kerala Story, had sparked significant controversy upon its release, with political parties and civil society groups divided over its content. Supporters argued it highlighted sensitive issues, while critics accused it of exaggeration and misrepresentation. The debate extended beyond Kerala, drawing national attention and legal challenges in multiple states.

Vijayan reiterated that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and cautioned against creative works that, he claimed, attempt to deepen communal divisions. He suggested that Kerala’s electorate and civil society would respond decisively to narratives perceived as targeting the state’s harmony and inclusiveness.
The remarks have reignited political debate, with opposition leaders countering that cinema should not be subjected to political censorship. As discussions intensify ahead of the sequel’s release, the controversy once again underscores the intersection of art, politics, and public sentiment in India’s evolving cultural landscape.
