PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti Criticises India’s Silence Amid US-Israel Strikes On Iran
Mehbooba Mufti criticises India’s inaction on US-Israel strikes, highlighting Iran’s past support and regional solidarity.
PDP President and former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday criticised the Indian government’s response to the recent US-Israel military strikes on Iran, calling the silence “incomprehensible.” Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, she said that Tehran had historically supported India, particularly during sanctions imposed over nuclear tests, and that India’s lack of condemnation or condolences was disappointing.
Mufti highlighted India’s diplomatic ties with Iran, noting that it had been the only Muslim-majority country to side with India on the Kashmir issue while most others supported Pakistan. She also recalled that Iran had supplied oil to India during sanctions without demanding immediate payment, an act she said should have prompted an official response from New Delhi.
In a symbolic protest against the attacks, Mufti burned effigies of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Srinagar. She described the gesture as an expression of solidarity with the Iranian people, praising their bravery and sacrifices while expressing grief over the situation.

The PDP leader criticised what she described as the global community’s muted response, including several Gulf and Middle Eastern countries she said were tacitly supporting the strikes by providing bases to American forces. She also questioned Pakistan’s position, referencing its recent Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia, which she suggested was aligned against Iran.
Mufti further urged the release of individuals detained during protests in the Kashmir Valley against the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. She also called for the withdrawal of FIRs against Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former city mayor Junaid Azim Mattu, while appealing to residents to remain peaceful despite ongoing tensions.
Political observers say Mufti’s statements underline concerns within certain Indian political circles regarding the government’s measured reaction to international conflicts. Her comments also reflect the broader public discourse on India’s historical relations with Iran and the need for consistent diplomatic messaging in times of global crises.
