Pattern of Deaths: Four Aides Lost by Suvendu Adhikari in 13 Years

Personal assistant Chandranath Rath shot dead; marks the fourth aide death under contested circumstances.

Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has once again come under public attention after the killing of his close aide Chandranath Rath in North 24 Parganas. Rath, who reportedly served as Adhikari’s personal assistant, was shot dead on Wednesday night, triggering political reactions across the state. Adhikari described the incident as a political killing, although investigators have not yet confirmed any political motive behind the murder. The incident has renewed discussions around a series of unnatural deaths involving individuals closely associated with the BJP leader over the last 13 years.

According to reports, this is not the first time a close associate of Adhikari has died under controversial circumstances. In 2013, Pradip Jha, another personal assistant linked to Adhikari during his years in the Trinamool Congress, died in Purba Medinipur district. While the case attracted local attention at the time, it did not escalate into a major political issue across the state. Over the years, several other associates and security personnel connected to Adhikari have reportedly lost their lives in incidents that later became subjects of political speculation and public debate.

The latest killing has intensified political tensions in West Bengal ahead of future electoral battles, especially as Adhikari continues to emerge as one of the BJP’s strongest faces in the state. The BJP leader gained national prominence after defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram Assembly election and has remained a vocal critic of the ruling Trinamool Congress government. Supporters of the BJP have demanded a thorough investigation into Rath’s death, while opposition parties have urged against drawing conclusions before official findings are released.

Investigative agencies are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, though no direct connection has been established between the various deaths linked to Adhikari’s aides over the years. Political observers note that the recurring incidents have increasingly become part of West Bengal’s charged political discourse, particularly given Adhikari’s growing influence within the BJP. Authorities are expected to question multiple individuals and review evidence from the crime scene as the investigation progresses.
