Parliament Deadlock: Opposition Won’t Budge, Says Kharge

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said the Opposition was not changing its demands and had maintained a consistent position from the beginning, as a continued deadlock disrupted proceedings in Parliament. Speaking to reporters at the Parliament House complex, Kharge said the Opposition’s concerns had remained unresolved and accused the government of avoiding a detailed response to issues it had raised.

Kharge said the Opposition’s primary demand was for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to make a statement in Parliament on the alleged police action against protesting students. The allegations include the use of lathi-charge and pellet guns during the protests. According to Kharge, the Opposition wants clarity on who authorised the police action, how it was carried out and the circumstances that led to the injuries reported among the students.

The Congress president said the issue had remained unresolved for 18 days. He claimed that more than 100 students had suffered minor injuries, while several others were wounded by pellet guns, with some also falling ill or being hospitalised following the alleged lathi-charge. Kharge said the Opposition wanted the government to address these allegations directly on the floor of the House rather than provide what he described as a brief statement before moving on to other business.

Kharge also referred to two other demands that the Opposition has raised during the parliamentary standoff. He identified the “Chanda Chori” or alleged donation theft matter as the second issue and said the third demand was for an apology. According to the Congress chief, these three matters had been raised consistently from the outset and had not been resolved.

The Opposition’s position comes as the Parliament deadlock continues, with repeated disruptions preventing normal legislative business from proceeding smoothly. Kharge rejected any suggestion that the Opposition had shifted its demands during the standoff, saying the issues remained relevant and would continue to be raised until the government addressed them.

Kharge’s remarks underline the widening confrontation between the Opposition and the government over the alleged police action and the other issues cited by the Congress. With the Opposition insisting on statements and an apology, while the government faces pressure to restore normal parliamentary proceedings, the impasse is expected to remain a major point of contention until the two sides reach an understanding.
