Pappu Yadav's Parliament Appearance In Religious Attire Draws BJP's Privilege Complaint

BJP Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Jaiswal has submitted a privilege notice against Independent MP Pappu Yadav, alleging that his appearance in Hindu sadhu attire at Makar Dwar inside the Parliament complex lowered the dignity of the House and hurt religious sentiments. The notice seeks action under the rules governing breach of privilege and contempt of the House. Jaiswal submitted the notice to Lok Sabha Speaker under Rule 222 read with Rule 223 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha.

He requested that the matter be admitted and, if considered appropriate, referred to the Committee of Privileges under Rule 227 for detailed examination. In his complaint, Jaiswal alleged that Pappu Yadav staged a “scripted enactment” on July 31 at Makar Dwar while wearing attire associated with a Hindu sadhu. He claimed that the Independent MP carried a photograph or idol of Lord Ram and portrayed a temple priest collecting offerings from devotees and allegedly keeping the money instead of depositing it in a donation box.

The BJP MP said the act was connected to allegations regarding donation irregularities at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya. He alleged that the performance was intended to ridicule or trivialise Hindu religious symbols and sentiments, and described it as conduct unbecoming of a Member of Parliament. “Conduct unbecoming of a Member and lowering the dignity of the House,” Jaiswal stated in the grounds of the privilege motion. He argued that actions within the Parliament complex must maintain the decorum and dignity expected from elected representatives.

The controversy follows Pappu Yadav’s recent criticism of the government over allegations related to the handling of donations associated with the Ram Mandir. His protest gesture at Parliament was aimed at highlighting his allegations, though it drew criticism from BJP leaders who objected to the use of religious symbols during the demonstration. The BJP has argued that Parliament premises are a place for democratic debate and political expression within established norms, but that actions involving religious representation must not cross boundaries that could offend communities or undermine institutional dignity.

Pappu Yadav, an Independent MP, has not yet publicly responded to the privilege notice. The matter will now depend on whether the Lok Sabha Speaker admits the complaint and decides on further action, including a possible reference to the Committee of Privileges. Under parliamentary rules, a breach of privilege notice allows MPs to raise concerns about actions that they believe obstruct the functioning of Parliament, violate the rights of members or damage the dignity of the House. The Speaker has the authority to examine such complaints before deciding whether further proceedings are required.

The dispute adds to the ongoing political confrontation in Parliament over the Ram Mandir donation issue and other matters being raised during the Monsoon Session. While the BJP has accused Yadav of crossing parliamentary boundaries, opposition voices have defended the use of demonstrations to raise public concerns. The Lok Sabha Speaker’s decision on the privilege notice will determine the next course of action in the matter. Meanwhile, the controversy has intensified political exchanges between the BJP and opposition leaders over the use of religious references in parliamentary protests.
