Opposition Walks Out Of Assam Assembly During Governor’s Address
Opposition MLAs walk out during Governor’s address in Assam Assembly.
Opposition members staged a walkout from the Assam Legislative Assembly on Friday during Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya’s address, alleging that key public concerns such as inflation and rising prices were not adequately reflected in the speech.
The disruption began just minutes after the Governor started addressing the House on the second day of the Assembly session. Opposition MLAs entered the Well of the House, raising objections and demanding that the government focus on pressing public issues, including the rising cost of living and alleged syndicate systems operating in the state. They argued that the address disproportionately highlighted government achievements while overlooking ground realities.
Following their protest inside the House, Opposition legislators collectively walked out of the Assembly as a mark of dissent. Speaking to reporters outside, Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed criticised the Governor’s address, stating that it failed to reflect the struggles and concerns of ordinary citizens and instead focused mainly on the achievements of the ruling government.

Ahmed further stated that the Opposition chose to boycott the address as a symbolic protest against what they described as the sidelining of critical public issues. He reiterated that inflation and other socio-economic challenges should have been given greater emphasis in the Governor’s speech.
In his address, Governor Acharya highlighted the return of the BJP-led NDA government for a third consecutive term, describing it as a reflection of public confidence in its governance model. He also cited progress in peace, economic development, and infrastructure, noting that Assam’s GSDP has been growing at an estimated compounded annual rate of nearly 16 percent, with the state projected to move towards a ₹10 lakh crore economy by 2028–29.
