Opposition Unites to Remove CEC Gyanesh Kumar in Unprecedented Parliamentary Move
INDIA bloc parties finalise the removal notice against CEC Gyanesh Kumar to be submitted this week.
Opposition parties from the INDIA bloc are preparing to move a motion in Parliament seeking the removal of Gyanesh Kumar, which could become the first attempt to remove a sitting Chief Election Commissioner in India’s history.
According to sources, leaders from several opposition parties have already finalised a draft notice and started collecting signatures from Members of Parliament. The proposal is expected to be submitted in Parliament later this week. The move is being coordinated by parties within the INDIA alliance, including the Indian National Congress and All India Trinamool Congress.
A senior Trinamool Congress MP involved in drafting the proposal said the initiative is a joint effort by multiple opposition parties. The leader claimed the drafting and planning had been carried out collectively by “like-minded parties” and said the execution of the motion in both Houses of Parliament would also involve full coordination among alliance partners.

Opposition leaders have accused Kumar of damaging the credibility of the office of the Chief Election Commissioner, which heads the Election Commission of India. One TMC leader alleged that the CEC had “totally degraded the great seat he occupies,” though detailed reasons behind the proposed removal have not yet been publicly outlined.
Sources within the Congress confirmed that the party would support the motion, while other parties in the INDIA bloc are also expected to back the move. If the notice is formally submitted, it will trigger a parliamentary process similar to the removal procedure for a Supreme Court judge, requiring significant support in both Houses of Parliament. The development sets the stage for a major political confrontation between the opposition alliance and the ruling government over the functioning and independence of the Election Commission.
