Opposition To Raise Alleged Police Brutality At CJP Protests In Parliament

The Congress-led Opposition is set to intensify its attack on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Parliament over the alleged police crackdown on protesting students during the 'Chalo Jantar Mantar' protests, with leaders expected to demand accountability from the Centre and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The issue is likely to dominate proceedings when Parliament reconvenes on Monday, alongside discussions on the paper leak controversy if the ongoing impasse in both Houses is resolved.

According to sources, the Opposition's strategy will be finalised at a meeting of the INDIA bloc scheduled to take place in the chamber of Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Monday morning. Apart from deciding its approach to the alleged police action, the alliance is also expected to formulate its stand on the government's proposed bill to amend the two-year-old anti-paper leak law. The legislation is likely to be a key point of discussion if parliamentary business resumes after repeated disruptions in recent days.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has escalated the matter by writing to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking accountability for what he described as a "barbaric assault" on peacefully protesting students. In his letter, Gandhi questioned whether the home minister had authorised the use of "lethal force", including pellet guns, against demonstrators. He also sought clarification on the identity of individuals seen assaulting students while dressed in plain clothes, asking whether they were police personnel or volunteers and who had authorised their deployment.

Gandhi argued that the right to peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy and said it is the government's responsibility to engage with protesters through dialogue rather than force. "Such brutal violence destroys every norm, and has outraged the country. Youth and students, the future of our country, are demanding answers and accountability. Their voice will be heard," he said in the letter. Sharing the correspondence, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh reiterated the party's demand that Amit Shah answer the questions in Parliament and said Prime Minister Modi should apologise to the students over the alleged police action.

The Congress has maintained that the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the paper leak issue marked a victory for students, but insists that it does not conclude the matter. Mallikarjun Kharge has said it is now the prime minister's turn to apologise and initiate strict action against those responsible for the alleged use of lathis, batons and pellet guns during the protests. The BJP-led government has yet to formally respond to the Opposition's latest demands. With both the police action against protesters and the paper leak controversy expected to feature prominently, Monday's parliamentary proceedings are likely to witness heated exchanges if the deadlock between the government and the Opposition comes to an end.
