Opposition Moves No-Confidence Motion Against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

Opposition submits no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with 119 MPs' signatures.

In a significant escalation of parliamentary tensions, Opposition parties on Tuesday formally submitted a no-confidence motion seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi confirmed that the notice, signed by around 119 Members of Parliament, was submitted to the Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha at 1:14 pm under Article 94C of the Constitution.

The Opposition has alleged a complete breakdown of trust in the Speaker’s impartiality, accusing Birla of favouring the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Central to the charge is the claim that Opposition leaders, particularly Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, have been repeatedly denied adequate speaking time while BJP members are allegedly allowed to target Opposition figures without restraint.

The notice outlines three major grievances, including a recent incident in which Rahul Gandhi was denied permission to read from former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane’s memoir during a debate on the Ladakh border issue. In contrast, the Opposition questioned why BJP MP Nishikant Dubey was allowed to read material critical of the Gandhi family despite being asked by the presiding officer to stop.

Another contentious issue cited in the motion is Birla’s reported statement that he had advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi to forgo a speech, claiming that Congress women MPs were planning to confront him near his seat. The Opposition has termed this assertion as highly improper and damaging to the dignity of Parliament.

Although Article 94C mandates a 14-day notice period for such a resolution, parliamentary sources indicate that the motion is unlikely to be taken up before the current session concludes on February 13. As a result, any debate or decision on the matter is expected to be deferred to the next session beginning on March 9.

The development follows a letter submitted by BJP women MPs to the Speaker, demanding stringent action against Opposition members over a ruckus in the House on February 4, 2026. The letter alleges that Opposition MPs violated parliamentary norms by entering the well of the House and sitting on the Speaker’s table, further deepening the standoff between the treasury benches and the Opposition.
