Opposition Members Suspended From Bihar House After Nitish Minister, RJD MLC Confrontation

Bihar Assembly expels opposition members after clash between Nitish Kumar’s minister and RJD MLC disrupts proceedings.

The Bihar Legislative Council witnessed chaotic scenes on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, leading to the suspension and physical eviction of opposition members, primarily from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), following a heated clash. The uproar stemmed from demands for an apology from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his alleged remark referring to Leader of Opposition Rabri Devi as "ladki" (girl) during proceedings the previous day, which opposition members deemed disrespectful and unbecoming. The incident escalated into pandemonium for the second consecutive day of the Budget session, disrupting normal House business.

The trouble began shortly after the Council convened around noon, with RJD MLCs, including Abdul Bari Siddiqui and Abdul Qari Sohaib, raising objections and insisting that the Chief Minister be summoned to apologize. Opposition members trooped into the well of the House, raising slogans against Nitish Kumar and the ruling coalition. The situation intensified when a sharp verbal exchange erupted between RJD MLC Sunil Singh and state Rural Works Minister Ashok Choudhary (JD(U)), with both sides allegedly using unparliamentary language and trading personal accusations. Reports indicate the confrontation nearly turned physical, heightening tensions between treasury and opposition benches.

Chairman Awadhesh Narain Singh repeatedly warned the protesting members to return to their seats and allow proceedings to continue, but the disruptions persisted. After failing to restore order, the Chairman invoked disciplinary measures, suspending the opposition MLCs for the day and directing marshals to evict them from the chamber. Among those suspended and removed were Rabri Devi (Leader of Opposition), Sunil Singh, Ajay Kumar Singh, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Qari Sohaib, Munni Devi (all RJD), and Shashi Yadav (CPI-ML Liberation). Marshals physically escorted the members out amid continued sloganeering.

The episode reflects ongoing political friction in Bihar's Upper House, where the RJD-led opposition has frequently disrupted sessions over governance issues, including law and order and perceived insults. The ruling NDA coalition, headed by Nitish Kumar, has maintained that such protests violate House norms and hinder legislative work. The Chairman emphasized that no one could speak during question hour or disturb proceedings, underscoring the need for decorum in debates.

This suspension adds to a pattern of confrontations in the Bihar legislature during the current session, with opposition parties accusing the government of suppressing dissent while the ruling side points to repeated disruptions. The incident has drawn attention to the challenges of maintaining order in polarized political environments, with calls from various quarters for greater restraint to ensure productive parliamentary functioning. As the session continues, further debates on the budget and related matters are expected amid lingering tensions.
