Omar Abdullah Says JKNC MLAs Remain United, Rejects BJP Defection Speculation

Omar Abdullah denies rift rumours, asserts JKNC unity against BJP defections.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has firmly rejected speculation of internal rifts within the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), asserting that no MLA from the party will defect or align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His remarks came in response to claims made by the Leader of Opposition in the J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma, who suggested possible dissent within the ruling party.

Addressing the allegations, Abdullah said the BJP’s claims about potential defections only expose its political intentions. He dismissed comparisons being drawn to Maharashtra’s political developments, particularly the split in the Shiv Sena, and said such scenarios would not be replicated in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape.

Taking a sharp dig, Abdullah remarked that there would be “no Eknath Shindes” within the National Conference, referring to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the high-profile party split that reshaped Maharashtra politics. He reiterated that JKNC MLAs remain united and fully committed to the party leadership.

The Chief Minister also accused the BJP leadership in the Union Territory of attempting to destabilise the elected government. He suggested that opposition statements were aimed at creating confusion and projecting an image of instability within the ruling party, which he said does not reflect ground reality.

Sunil Sharma had earlier alleged that the JKNC was facing internal instability and that multiple MLAs were ready to break away from the party. He further claimed that the Chief Minister was delaying Cabinet expansion due to fears of dissent, and warned that the government could “collapse like a pack of cards” if internal divisions surfaced.

However, Abdullah dismissed these claims outright, reiterating that the National Conference remains cohesive and that there is no scope for defections. He maintained that the party’s legislative strength remains intact and that it continues to function with unity and discipline within the Assembly.
