Om Birla's Merger Ruling Boosts Shinde's Shiv Sena in NDA

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's decision to recognise the merger of six Shiv Sena (UBT) Members of Parliament with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has significantly altered the political balance within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The approval increases the Shinde faction's strength in the Lok Sabha from seven to 13 MPs, while reducing the Shiv Sena (UBT) tally to three MPs, strengthening the party's influence both in Parliament and within the BJP-led coalition.

The recognition of the merger came shortly before the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament and follows the political realignment that began after the split in the Shiv Sena. With 13 MPs, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena has emerged as the third-largest constituent of the NDA, behind the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). The enhanced parliamentary presence is expected to give the party greater leverage in alliance discussions and national decision-making.

The development is particularly significant in the context of Maharashtra politics. Following the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the dominant force within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena playing a supporting role. By strengthening its numbers in the Lok Sabha, the Shiv Sena hopes to regain some of its political influence and bargaining power within both the state coalition and the NDA at the national level.

The merger also represents a setback for the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), whose parliamentary representation has been reduced considerably. With only three MPs remaining in the Lok Sabha, the party's ability to influence parliamentary debates and coalition politics has diminished, even as it continues to position itself as a key opposition force in Maharashtra.

Political observers believe the increased numerical strength could allow the Shinde-led Shiv Sena to seek a larger role in parliamentary committees, policy discussions and future Cabinet or organisational negotiations within the NDA. The move may also strengthen the party's claim as the principal representative of the Shiv Sena in national politics, reinforcing its standing following previous legal and electoral developments.

The Speaker's decision is therefore viewed as having implications beyond parliamentary arithmetic. It reshapes the internal dynamics of the NDA, enhances the Shinde faction's political weight at the national level and adds another dimension to the continuing rivalry between the two Shiv Sena factions as they compete for influence in Maharashtra and within India's broader political landscape.
