Odisha Districts Reel Under Relentless Monsoon Downpour

Depression triggers heavy rain, landslides across state.

Odisha is grappling with relentless downpours as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression, unleashing heavy rainfall across multiple districts on Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Kandhamal have been hit hardest, with the deluge causing landslides, submerging roads and bridges, and uprooting trees in southern districts. The IMD’s 9:20 am bulletin noted that the depression crossed the south Odisha coast near Gopalpur early Tuesday, moving north-northwest at 7 kmph.

The weather system, originating over the northwest and westcentral Bay of Bengal near the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts, is expected to move northwest across south Odisha and south Chhattisgarh, weakening into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next six hours. However, the IMD forecasts rain across most parts of Odisha until August 23, keeping authorities on high alert. The rough sea conditions along the Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal coasts have prompted warnings for fishermen to avoid venturing out, as the turbulent weather poses significant risks.

The heavy rainfall has disrupted daily life, particularly in southern Odisha, where infrastructure damage is mounting. In Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur, landslides have blocked key roads, isolating villages and hampering rescue efforts. Local administrations are deploying disaster response teams to clear debris and assist affected communities, while authorities have urged residents to avoid flooded areas and swollen rivers. The state government is closely monitoring the situation, with relief measures being prepared for potential evacuations.

The ongoing monsoon fury underscores Odisha’s vulnerability to extreme weather, with the state still recovering from past cyclone and flood impacts. The IMD’s warning of continued rainfall has raised concerns about further damage to crops, homes, and infrastructure, particularly in rural areas. Community leaders are calling for improved drainage systems and early warning mechanisms to mitigate future monsoon-related disasters.

As Odisha braces for more rain, the state’s disaster management teams are working round-the-clock to ensure public safety. The IMD’s alerts have prompted schools and businesses in affected districts to take precautionary measures, while residents are stocking up on essentials. With the depression’s impact expected to linger, authorities are urging vigilance and preparedness to navigate the challenging days ahead.
