No External Influence on Constitutional Processes: BJP's Narayanan Thirupathy

The final decision rests strictly on legislative numbers.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has dismissed allegations that actor-politician Vijay is being politically pressured for opposing the party, calling such claims “political rhetoric” amid ongoing uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu following a closely contested election outcome.

BJP state spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy said there was no question of external influence on constitutional processes and stressed that the final decision rests strictly on legislative numbers. He noted that Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi Arlekar has not yet been convinced that Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has the required majority to form the government.

Thirupathy said the situation represents a “fractured verdict” and argued that the TVK must demonstrate its majority on the floor of the House. He added that if Vijay is able to prove support, the Governor would act in accordance with constitutional norms. He also rejected suggestions that political pressure could be exerted on the process, saying such claims do not reflect democratic reality.

The remarks come at a time of heightened political activity in the state, with the TVK emerging as a strong performer in its electoral debut, securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. With the majority mark at 118, the party is short by 10 seats and is actively seeking support from potential allies.

The Congress has already extended conditional backing to the TVK, adding five MLAs to Vijay’s tally, while discussions are reportedly ongoing with smaller parties such as the VCK and Left formations. Meanwhile, Vijay has met the Governor twice in recent days to stake claim, but was reportedly asked to clarify his support base and governance plan before any formal decision is made. The Governor is expected to act only after a clear majority is established.
