NIA Arrests Two Congress Leaders In Connection With Malda Gherao Case
NIA arrests two Congress leaders in Malda gherao case.
The National Investigation Agency has arrested two Congress-linked individuals in connection with the Malda gherao incident involving the alleged unlawful confinement of judicial officers during a protest in West Bengal’s Malda district, according to official sources.
The arrests were made as part of an ongoing probe into the April 1 incident at the Kaliachak-II block office in Mothabari, where a large group had allegedly gheraoed the premises during protests linked to electoral roll revisions under the Special Intensive Revision process. During the incident, seven judicial officers were reportedly confined for several hours before being rescued.
Investigators have identified the arrested individuals as local political functionaries allegedly involved in mobilising and coordinating aspects of the gathering that escalated into the blockade. Officials said the NIA is examining whether the event was a spontaneous protest or part of a pre-planned mobilisation that contributed to the escalation.

In addition to the arrests, the agency has also questioned several other individuals linked to the case, including a Congress-nominated candidate from the region, as part of widening inquiries into the chain of events leading up to the incident. Authorities have reportedly seized mobile devices and other digital evidence for forensic analysis to reconstruct communications and coordination patterns.
The case, initially handled by state agencies, was transferred to the NIA following concerns over the scale and nature of the incident, which involved the confinement of judicial officers and raised questions about organised mobilisation. The agency has since intensified its investigation with multiple FIRs registered across local police stations and coordinated field-level inquiries in Malda.
Political reactions have further intensified the controversy, with opposition parties alleging selective targeting, while authorities maintain that the investigation is based strictly on evidence gathered during the probe. Officials have reiterated that all actions taken so far are procedural and part of a broader effort to establish accountability. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further arrests or questioning may follow as forensic analysis and witness statements are evaluated.
