New Frontrunner Emerges In Congress For Kerala’s Top Post
New frontrunner emerges in Congress Kerala leadership contest
With the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) securing a decisive mandate in Kerala, a high-stakes internal contest has intensified over the selection of the state’s next Chief Minister, with top party leaders holding a series of consultations in Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi. The decision now rests with the Congress high command, which is weighing political balance, organisational experience, and electoral strategy before announcing its choice.
Among the frontrunners is senior Congress leader and AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, who is emerging as a strong contender for the top post. Venugopal recently returned to Kerala after a series of meetings in the national capital, where he met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. His supporters within the party have projected him as a key architect of the UDF’s electoral success.
Demonstrations of support for Venugopal have been visible in Kerala, with posters and banners outside Congress offices and party-linked institutions describing him as the “Nayakan” of the victory. Youth Congress workers and supporters have also publicly demanded that he be considered for the Chief Minister’s post, citing his role in campaign coordination and organisational strategy.

However, another strong contender in the race is VD Satheesan, who played a central role in leading the Congress campaign in Kerala. Satheesan’s leadership during the opposition phase and his prominence in the election campaign have strengthened his claim to the top position. Party insiders view him as a key mass leader with strong connect among grassroots workers.
Satheesan has also recently been at the centre of a political controversy following his remarks comparing leadership styles, including references to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s early political career. While his comments were interpreted by some as a broader point on governance and leadership ability, critics within and outside the party viewed them as politically sensitive. His supporters, however, have defended the statement as contextual and focused on administrative competence rather than ideology.
Former Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala is also part of the leadership race. Chennithala recently travelled to New Delhi and met Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge amid ongoing discussions on organisational matters. While he publicly stated that his visit was related to party work in Maharashtra, political sources suggest he also expressed interest in the Chief Minister’s post.
As lobbying intensifies across factions, party leaders have begun sending representations to senior leadership, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, advocating for their preferred candidates. The Congress high command is expected to take a final decision after assessing internal consensus among MLAs and broader political considerations within the newly formed UDF government.
